Salta is a lovely colonial town and is a good base for exploring the high Andes. We really only spent a day there as we planned to spend the next month or so on and around the high Andes.

Salta is particularly memorable due to Anthony´s near death experience in a Parrilla (Argentinean steak house) when he attempted to consume a bread roll in one single swallow. To paint the scene, Kathryn was ordering from the Argentinean waiter at the time while Anthony chowed down on the weapon that could have been his undoing. Just as it came to his turn to order, the weapon lodged itself in his wind pipe. At which point he stood up heaving and proceeded to walk around the restaurant gasping for air and trying to ask for water.

At this point, Kathryn was working through her "4 Bs" which she´d learned during her first aid course at work (breathing, blood, burns, bones). Anthony´s lack of breathing and wild motions with his arms assisted in narrowing down the issue to that of breathing - so Kathryn went into action. First the heimlich maneuver called on but Anthony´s height and weight put a holt to this. So he was bent over a chair and 5 good hard wallops finally got the roll dislodged from his wind pipe and the Kathryn and Anthony farewell tour kicked off once again with a fine sirloin steak. Waiters and diners alike were greatly entertained and we think Anthony got a louder applause than the folk singers who came in after his performance.
