Travelers weŽd met had raved about Salvador and we were therefore surprised to find the once wealthy city to be very run down and dilapidated with terribly polluted beaches. Perhaps if you can afford to spend a good week or so exploring the depths of the city then Salvador might leave a warmer impression.

However, it was nice to enjoy some hot weather, witness the African (vs. European) influence and to be there when the religious festival (Sao Jaio) was on.  Brazil certainly knows how to party.  Music and dancing throughout the main streets of Salvador into the early hours of each morning were standard fare.

Afternoons were spent relaxing in the sun and soaking up the French music and cocktails in a quiet but perfect little cafe a few doors from where we were staying.  All in all Salvador, while no Rio or Sao Paulo, did end up leaving its mark.
