My dear bloggity-ers,
Cairo is, quite simply, fantastic. After my flight yesterday, I got through customs and everything just fine and met my driver, who took me to Steve's house. First thing I need to say about Cairo: the traffic is crazy. There are no stoplights, the lines on the roads are a mere formality that no one really pays attention to, and people just run in front of cars without any concern. Also all the delivery trucks are decorated with bright colored paint and designs. Many have whatever they are carrying piled so high it looks as if it is going to teeter over onto the road. After my interesting car ride, I got to Steve's house and Steve and his family have been nothing but gracious since I arrived.
Today I woke up at eight and went with my guide Hany on my tour of some of the sights of Egypt. First we went to the famous Pyramids of Giza, which were astonishing. Then I saw the Sphinx. It is directly in front of the pyramids and is carved out of one large piece of limestone. After that, we then went to the Egyptian Museum. There is so much in the museum that it is literally cluttered with ancient Egyptian artifacts. Unfortunately my jet lag hit right in the middle of Hany telling me about the King Tut exhibit. It was so interesting though that I perservered. We then went to the bazaar, a shopping area in Cairo. It's comprised of a bunch of fairly narrow alleys where pushy salesman confront you at every turn. Here we sat down at a traditional Egyptian cafe and had a glass of tea while people around us smoked on their hookas and spoke in Arabic.
My tour guide Hany is a very devout Christian, and the only topic that intrests him more than talking about the goodness of God is Egyptian history. He is extremely kind and has done far above what he has to to make sure I have a great time in Egypt and understand more about it. Tomorrow Hany is taking me to the famous mosques and churches of Cairo. I'll write more when I return!
