Howick is a smallish town not far from Pietermaritzburg, and is famous for the Howick Falls, which is a popular tourist attraction. Howick is considered to be apopular place for retirement.

The Midmar Dam is situated just outside Howick, close to the N3 highway. The famous "Midmar Mile" race is held here annually. The are chalets and a camping site at the dam.
