New Providence has a very interesting history, especially as it has the country's capital, Nassau, on it. The Bahamas have been held by 12 governments of one sort or another, since being officially discovered in 1492. Spain was the first to control it, led by a procession of the British, French, and yes, even pirates on the odd occasion. Those 4 entities fought back and forth over the Bahamas, Britain finally winning for good in 1718. The Bahamas became a Commonwealth country with limited self-government in 1969, and gained independence from Britian in 1973. The British influence there is still huge though, making it charming, with a few delightful quirks!
