So after driving for 7 hours (which, by the way, still felt like less time than driving the treacherously flat 3.5 hour stretch of highway from Tampa to Coral Springs) we got to Columbia, South Carolina. We made reservations at the Inn at USC - a very nice and charming small hotel - and were offered a glass of champagne when we checked in.

We wanted to stretch our legs so we headed out to Finlay Park, which I had read was having a Summer Concert Series Saturday nights with live music and food vendors. We circled around a few streets before we found a metered parking, paid our $2 in quarters and went down to the park. It was absolutely lovely. There was a spiral water fountain that cascaded down a 40 foot trail into a lake. To make it better, there were swings set up around the waterfall so that you could just sit back and relax.

After walking around the entire park and taking a bunch of pictures, we decided to head back to Gervais St. to check out the local restaurants. And then the fun began....

We realized that the only parking was metered parking.... and we had just used our only $2 of quarters for the parking at Finlay.

BUT we luck out and find a prime spot right up front, in the middle of where all the restaurants are. Joey figures he'll run into the Starbucks that is right next door to buy something small so that he can get cash back, and then change a few dollars to quarters. Great plan, unfortunately, the guy at Starbucks tells Joey "no can do."

So we leave our awesome parking space to go drive down the street to Publix and get cash from the ATM.

Finally, Joey comes back with a $10 roll of quarters, we drive back over to the restaurants and we find a spot (even though this one is in a back alley.) Joey puts another $2 of quarters into the meter and says "Oh, that sucks this cars meter is expired" .......................

Then, he looks at the meter machine, front and back ... Whats this?? A special message on the back which said that metered parking was for 9am - 6pm (it is now 8pm.) Awesome!

Don't they say that South Carolinians are known to be so nice and friendly? Well I really don't think that the metered parking scam is very nice at all!!! In the words of Stephanie Tanner, "How Rude!"

Either way, we laughed it off and had some yummy calamari and spring roll appetizers at the Liberty Tap Room & Grill. When we got back to the hotel, the front desk had soft, gooey chocolate chip and white chocolate macadamia nut cookies which ended the night on a sweeter note.

All metered parking is free after 6pm, Sunday's, and holidays when the meter maids are off.
