When I got to know that my Rastafriend from Long Bay had to go to Kingston to get some paper the same day I was planning to travel, I decided to leave at the same time. Thought it would be helpful to arrive in the 'big' town with someone local.
I had got very used to that waiting time is usually the bigger part of travelling then moving time, but apparently my usually so relaxed Rastafriend was not equally relaxed about travelling and already got nervous after a few minutes unsuccessfully waiting for a route taxi or minibus at the street and started walking up and down. Funny, me telling a Jamaican 'Sit down and relax mon, soon come' ;-) ('Soon come' is another favourite expression for many situations, because everything takes some time).
Anyways, few hours later we arrived in Kingston and my friend helped me to find a nice little hotel in Uptown. Uptown, especially New Kingston is the modern and saver part of the city. We then went Downtown, the 'rougher' part of the city, got that paper and then had some good streetfood at a corner. Even though my friend had been born in town, he didn't seem to feel comfortable, I told him I would be allright and he should start his journey back to Portland and I took a taxi back to my hotel. This is the 'dangerous' city life again, sometimes better taking a taxi if not knowing where to go, else I usually don't mind just walking around and asking for my way, but my friend told me 'this is Kingston, you don't ask, you have to know'. Allright mon. Jah, rasta for right
