Otavalo is renowned for its Saturday artesania markets - and a good reason to avoid Otavalo on a Saturday if you want to minimise your exposure to other tourists. The markets operate on other days, and though not quite as vibrant, give you the chance to walk without being crushed in the rush. With only a month to go, we let down our barriers a little and decided to forego the weight and buy a few souvenirs.
Public bus to Tulcán, a typical border town, with its assortment of drunks, dodgy characters, plaza and electric church bells. We stay the night in a 4th floor pensión and are woken in the late hours by an army parade with brass band, car horns and, megaphones.
