So - it's the start of my first full week off since I returned from Australia a year ago, and boy do I need it.  I headed to Las Vegas for the start of a somewhat yuppie roadtrip through national parks.  The year of travelling has really taxed my patience, particularly with northwest airlines.  They were on time for 2 segments to this point in 2007 for me.  Anyway, my flight was delayed a few hours, then my luggage was not on my flight, it was on the next flight, so the best option was to wait for it.    So, when we were supposed to be able to get the rental car and drive to Grand Canyon at 3pm, it was actually 8pm.   Needless to say, I was a little upset by this.  The only thing about this situation was that i was upgraded, so at least i got some free food and drink on the crappy flight.

The drive out to Grand Canyon was about 4 hours, and i was nearly falling asleep, until this GIANT deer almost ran in front of me.  I narrowly avoided a big issue, and was awake for the remaining part of the drive.  Checked into the grand canyon lodge and got a look of astonishment that we didn't want a wake up call at 7am for hiking....9:30 was fine for us.

So we took our time sleeping in and getting breakfast and provisions for hiking.  We finally started the Bright Angel Trail around 1pm.  the altitude is pretty serious, and it was a serious 6 mile hike.  I suspect i had heat exhaustion, as I didn't feel right and needed a nap.  We went and watched the sunset at the most popular spot, and I kept calling every bird a condor (not really a nature buff, I just like strange rocks).  Then we had a lovely dinner at the somewhat fancy restaurant in the park.  I liked the hot salsa.
