On day 5 of the HP fantrip we had breakfast in the hotel and then boarded the coach to meet up with the family group at the Edinburgh Airport. We took a small flybe plane with propellers and we hd to take a bus from the gate to the plane, which is basically my least favorite way to get a plane.  Sometimes the plane is so close that it seems more logical to walk.  I guess these airports have so many planes that they don't have enough space by the gate?  Anyway, we flew to Birmingham in England and the coach that picked us up was decked out in Gryffindor colors, a detail that no one seemed to miss and many celebrated.  Since we had to stagger with the family group we had some time to kill before going to Gloucester Cathedral so we went to the Gloucester Harbor.  There really wasn’t much to do there – there was a museum and some shops but everyone ended up coming back to the bus 20 minutes before we had to meet up so we headed on to the cathedral. We were still a little early so we walked around the town for a bit and managed to find the Beatrix Potter store since she lived in the town (she wrote Peter Rabbit and other children’s books).  The store was super cute and mom bought a couple of books.

We finally made it into Gloucester Cathedral and it was since because we got a history lesson and got to go into the crypt but also saw a much of Hogwart’s halls locations.  The architecture was very recognizable from all of the HP films and according to our trip guide, "Gloucester’s cloisters were chosen because the resembled the old and eccentric school of wizards and witchcraft as envisaged by the author J.K. Rowling."  Since it is a functioning church the movie crew had to do a lot and cover up the stained glass, light bulbs, and modern appliances.  Our guides showed us a box that covered up the light switches during the movie that the church asked to keep.  They also showed us the marks on the floor where they had built another floor for the scene where Moaning Myrtle flooded the hall in COS and where they found Mrs. Norris petrified with “the chamber of secrets has been opened…” written on the walls.  We also recognized where the troll strolled by in HP 1 and the pillar that Ron and Harry hid behind.  It was the same pillar in the 6th movie that Harry hid behind while he overhead Snape and Malfoy arguing and the unbreakable bond was mentioned. The basin that was right in front of Harry the monks used to wash up!  After visiting Gloucester Cathedral we went to the hotel and had a full group dinner before listening to a storyteller named Amy.  The stories were great but the kids asked so many questions that she could barely get through one without interruptions!
