Mondays aren't so bad when they are followed by Sundays at the beach! The team had a rejuvenating day yesterday. First, we had dinner Saturday night at a local restaurant- they had a back area with thatched walls and we had the whole place to ourselves. The food was delicious and the company was great. After dinner we walked through town to the disco, stopping on the way for ice cream. We went to the disco at about 10pm and we were the only people there, I guess disco-ing hours are from midnight to 5am...that's okay though since we didn't need anyone seeing our dance moves! I left with a few people at about 12:30 but others stayed later. By the time we left a line had formed outside the disco and you could have heard a pin drop when a couple of blondes walked out the door!
Yesterday we piled into vans, trucks and a "bus" to head to the beach near Paita, we stopped on the way in Catacaos I believe which is the arts and crafts capital, you can buy a lot of silver jewelry and other items. When we got to the beach we had 3 bungalows to share and then a large deck by the restaurant complete with hammocks and lounge chairs. It wasn't long before I hiked over the dunes to get to the beach with Steve, Liz and Lindy. We were brave and got in the water, it was a little chilly but those of you who know me know that I can't see water, especially ocean, without getting in! We played in the waves, Lindy and I sang the theme to
Chariots of Fire and ran down the beach (hey, at least it wasn't baywatch) and by the end I was "crunchy" with salt and sand. It was a great day of relaxing and enjoying eachothers company- taking a mental break from all that we've seen. We had a delicious dinner of ceviche and paella before heading up to the cliffs that overlook the ocean to watch the sunset. This trip has had some truly beautiful moments-some have been people and experiences some have been scenery,
We stopped in Piura on the way back to have ice cream and Joe and Jenifer and I popped into the gorgeous church on the plaza for a look around. It was wild seeing a big city like Piura after a week in Chulu, I can't imagine what will happen when I get home!
This morning I did rounds with the docs in recovery to get the discharge meds started, we've set up a process that works for us to relay the info and get the patients meds and hygeine items ready for them. We've got a big pile of medical records to make our way through from the Sierra team and I'm going to try to make it to the hospital to the OR for the GI surgery. We had some team members leave yesterday so there will be no more plastics or opthamology but there are plenty of other patients lined up!
Ciao!

I am so glad you were able to enjoy the beach! I loved it there. So relaxing!!! The sunset was beautiful fromt he cliffs but I hated to leave. The ice cream in Piura delicious! Best of luck to you this week! Soak it all in! :-)
I read the part about the blondes leaving the disco, and Nabil and I burst out laughing! Sounds like some good R&R, especially the beach!
