The last day of a holiday always sucks. Not only because it is the last day, but also because you have the dreaded trip home hanging over your head.  We stated the day by driving back to Amsterdam to return Dennis (but not before we had pulled over into a road-side stop to spend an hour packing up all our gear that had strewn itself into every nook and cranny of the van over the last 6 weeks).  He had been a good home and suited us perfectly.  And let's not forget the fact that he drove us 7025km around Europe!

After checking in at the airport we caught the train back into Amsterdam for a quick rush around to a number of different stores we had noted down on our previous visit.  We had decided not to buy things first time round as we didn’t want them taking up valuable space in the van.  Amazingly, even with Amsterdam’s non-predictable-direction-heading streets, we found every shop we wanted to, with just enough time to wolf down a quick meal before heading back to the airport for our marathon trip home.

The first flight we were so exhausted we slept the whole way.  But upon landing in Beijing, we suddenly remembered the hassle of getting a transit visa for China in order to transfer over to the domestic airport! Realising that we only had just over an hour to achieve something that took us more than that last time, we were biting our nails.  However, to our immense relief, it seems that China has sometime in the last 6 weeks come up with a much smoother and practical system for herding non-visa holders through immigration.  Phew!

The rest of the trip was slow but uneventful.  Getting on the third flight, finally Sydney bound for real, was a celebrated milestone.  Back in Springwood, we were happy to finally be home, but at the same time sad that such a wonderful holiday was over.  The holiday was everything we expected and more, and we couldn’t have hoped for a better time.  But, I must say that we realised that a lot more places need to be added to our dream list for future travels!!
