Finnally Beijin - "Northern capital" is the meaning in mandarin. It's a place that is difficult to clasiffy. On the first day here we both decided that we don't like it. The time of the year didn't help either -The Golden Week. Beijing is packed with domestic tourists. But then gradually, once we have became acquainted with the place, we start to like it more and more. For me, as an architect, it is difficult to place it in a category of cities. The reason for that is its scale. Imagine a central square of a city where you can fit probably half a dozen of football pitches and on the adjacent street (street? - rather super mega avenue) you can land a jumbo jet. This is the case of Tienanmen Square. Add to it The Forbidden City, which is a 1km square of a museum, a few quite big parks and greens with some govermental and representative buildings and you have a picture of the very center of Beijing. All this creates a massive uninhibited zone in the heart of this metropolis. Its life is organised arround this zone. Now wonder Beijing's traffic is among the worst in the world. You have to have a car to live here - distances are enormous. Neighboring quaters are separated by highways - 6 lanes each direction. It feels almost like they are separate towns. To get from one to another is quite a challenge - the best way is to take a bus or underground. Crossing the highway on foot involves descending to a tunnel or climbing a footbridge.
We spend in Beijing 10 days and every day we managed to discover something completely new to us and equally impressive. From atmospheric Hutongs, to modern architecture of National Grand Theatre, National Stadium, Aquatic Centre and CCTV headquaters. The New Beijing is not only concrete, steel and glass but also Art. A quater called "789" - a bit outside of city center is our quiet favourite. It's a mecca of all enthusiasts of temporary art and design. Full of galleries, shops and workshops with lively streets and squares. I dare to say that there are few places in the world to match it. At the end of our stay we admited that Beijing is likeable place. Also because, compering to the rest of China it's cleaner (WCs:) and people don't spit here on the ground. Yes, they do it constantly everywhere else:)
There is one big minus though. The air pollution. There were a few days with blueish skies and rather clear visibility but there were also days when it felt like having a walk in the mines. I seriously think that it's the only place on earth where smokers are healthier than non-smokers. At least the former are breathing through a filter. So in order to save our lungs and to get outside of China before our visa expires we're heading south .

Finalmente Pechino! Il primo approccio con la citta' mi lascia perplessa: le strade, gli edifici, gli spazi, (quadrati o rettangolari) sono abnormi; ho la sensazione di essere piccola piccola. E penso che questo sia lo scopo di tanta grandezza.
Arriviamo in questa immensa citta', la "Capitale del Nord" (questo e' il significato della parola Pechino) esattamente il 1 di ottobre e ci troviamo nel caos totale.
Riusciamo a trovare due posti letto in un ostello vicino al tempio di Lama, ma solo per una notte, e' tutto prenotato.
Non siamo gli unici a trovarci in questo casino; "mal comune mezzo gaudio" ci consola del fatto che non siamo i soli a essere sfigati.
Spendiamo i primi due giorni alla ricerca di due posti letto, visto e considerato che il solo pensiero di una doppia a un prezzo modico e' da scartare.
"Golden Week", ovvero "Settimana d'Oro" e' alta, anzi, altissima stagione, i prezzi raddoppiano, su tutto, anche sul cibo. Nonostante tutto riusciamo a trovare un alloggio nell'ostello della prima notte (consigliato da due nostri amici Nicos e Lysa), il Candy , non citato nel nostro Lonely Planet, ma che consideriamo fino ad ora il miglior ostello in cui siamo stati .
Il terzo giorno iniziamo a visitare la citta' , io sono senza speranze, Pechino continua a non piacermi. Le strade sono come autostrade, non puoi attraversarle, le distanze tra un incrocio e l'altro sono kilometriche e l'aria e' terribilmente pesante e secca.
La mia pelle e' irritata, mi esce uno sfogo sugli occhi. E' tutto un prurito.
Ho perso il mio entusiasmo nella visita della citta' e, dopo il tempio di Lama e alcuni "hutongs" ,ne ho gia' abbastanza ma Mateusz non demorde, prende in mano la situazione e iniziamo a esplorare la citta' nella sua contemporaneita'. Architettura moderna, il suo punto forte.
Visitiamo lo Stadio Olimpico e e il Centro Acquatico, il quartiere finanziario con l'edificio del CCTV e il Gran Teatro Nazionale. La Pechino moderna non e' solo vetro e cemento, ma anche arte. Spendiamo un'intera giornata nel quartiere 789, che consideriamo il nostro preferito, tra gallerie d'arte, laboratori,negozietti artigianali, musei, librerie e tanta esuberante creatività.
Riconsidero Pechino, e' una citta' strabordante di sorprese e novita'.
Visitiamo la Citta' Proibita, PiazzaTienanmen, i parchi del Centro, la parte antica (ricostruita), i mercatini e i mercatoni, ci rilassiamo con massaggi ai piedi e a tutto il corpo a prezzi stracciatissimi, la citta' mi piace...unica nota negativa, al momento, continua a essere l'aria, terribilmente inquinata.
Pechino ci conquista, ci restiamo la bellezza di dieci giorni... ma ora e' arrivato il momento di lasciarla.

W koncu Pekin - "Polnocna stolica" w tlumaczeniu z mandarynskiego na polski. To miejsce ktore trudno sklasyfikowac. Pierwszego dnia po przyjezdzie zdecydowanie nie polubilismy Pekinu. Kalendarz rowniez nam nie sprzyjal - jest "Zloty Tydzien" - ogolnonarodowe wakacje. Miejsce jest zapakowane chinskimi turystami. Ale po pewnym czasie, gdy udaje nam sie zaznajomic z okolica, zaczynamy lubic to miasto. Dla mnie jako architekta jest trudno wlozyc Pekin do kategorii normalnych miast. To spowodu jego ogromnej skali. Wyobrazcie sobie centralny plac miasta gdzie mozna zmiescic jakies 5-6 boisk pilkarskich. Gdzie glowna, przylegajaca do placu ulica czy raczej super aleja jest wystarczajaco szeroka aby wyladowac na niej jumbojetem. Tak wlasnie wygloda Tienanmen - Plac Niebianskiego Spokoju. Dodajmy jeszcze Zakazane Miasto - muzeum o powierzchni 1km2, garsc sporych parkow i skwerow z budynkami rzadowymi i reprezentacyjnymi i mamy obraz scislego centrum Pekinu.
Jedna wielka nie zamieszkana przestrzen w samym sercu miasta. Cale zycie Pekinu odbywa sie wokol tej strefy. Nic dziwnego ze ruch uliczny w tym miescie jest jednym z najgorszych na swiecie. Posiadanie samochodu to koniecznosc aby zyc tutaj - dystanse sa przeogromne. Sasiednie dzielnice sa oddzielone od siebie autostradami - 6 pasow w kazda strone. Ma sie uczucie ze to sa prawie oddzielne miasta. Zeby do dostac z jednej dzielnicy do drugiej najlepiej wziac autobus albo metro. Zeby przekroczyc autostrade pieszo trzeba zejsc do tunelu albo wspiac sie na kladke dla pieszych.
Spedzamy w Pekinie 10 dni i kazdego dnia odkrywamy cos kompletnie nowego i interesujacego. Od niepowtarzalnej atmosfery waskich uliczek Hutongow - starych dzielnic, do wspanialej architektury wspolczesnej Teatru Narodowego, Stadionu Narodowego, Centrum Plywackiego czy siedziby Chinskiej Telewizji Panstwowej. Ale Pekin to nie tylko beton, szklo i stal to takze sztuka. Dzielnica o tajemniczej nazwie "789", troche zdala od centrum to nasz cichy faworyt. To mekka entuzjastow sztuki nowoczesnej i wzornictwa. Pelna galerii, sklepow i warsztatow. Osmiele sie powiedziec ze trudno znalezc podobne miejsce na swiecie. Na koniec naszego pobytu przyznajemy ze Pekin da sie lubic. Jego zalety, porownujac do reszty Chin, to czystosc (zwlaszcza WCety) i fakt ze tutaj ludzie nie pluja ciagle na ziemie. Tak, w kazym innym miejscu robia to nagminnie:)Jest jednak jeden wielki minus - zanieczyszczenie powietrza. Obserwujemy tutaj kilka w miare ladnych dni ze wzglednie dobra widocznoscia ale wiekszosc dni ammy uczucie jagbysmy spacerowali w kopalni. Powaznie mysle sobie ze moze to jedyne miejsce na swiecie gdzie palacze sa zdrowsi od niepalacych - przybajmniej ci pierwsi oddychaja przez filter;) Wiec w celu ratowania naszych pluc opuszcamy Pekin. Rowniez, mamy wize 2u wjazdowa i pierwszy okres dwumiesieczny dobiega konca wiec musimy opuscic kontynentalne Chiny na moment.
