We were in drydock in Hull after unloading the remainder of the stinking copra which had been brought from the Solomon Islands by the previous crew. One evening we received an invite to attend a party at the Seamens Club (may have been the Flying Tabnabs or Flying Angel Club to those not familiar with the slang name!). The Harbour Lights Guild Of Hull put on a supper and dance for us lonely souls!!!
We had a great time with this bunch, many of whom seemed to be grass widows with husbands safely at sea somewhere! So good a time did the 3rd Mate have that I have heard since that he married one of them!
Well, it wasn't long before we had undergone all the registry examinations a British ship needed to pass to renew her certificates for another year. A new coat of antifouling along her bottom plates and new anodes etc., then we were off to sea down the wide Humber estuary. First stop, we were told was to be a port in Mexico called Coatzacoalacos, where we were to load the first part of an Australian bound cargo.
