I woke up bright and early to head to the airport. I really did not get that much sleep last night, as I was anticipating the onset of the trip. On the way to the airport I made on last stop, which was the ATM at Chartway. Out of all the times I do not go to the ATM, the one day I do the ATM was broken. So, I headed to the Terminal E drop off instead. This took my brother twice to get right. Once everyone arrived and checked in our group headed for security. This would be my first time going through the body scanner. It was not bad at all…what was the hype? Once through we found our gate and I was anxious to find me some breakfast. I had a delicious bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich at Charley's subs and a Starbucks Frapuchino. It sure hit the spot and would be the last "American" meal I would have for the next couple weeks. Finally, it was time to board the airplane and I was off for adventure (9:15 AM). During the plane ride, I tried to find something to keep myself occupied after the free Direct TV ended. Once or twice I played Go! Fish and I read a few articles in a newspaper someone bought. I was sure happy to get off the plane when it landed. First thing I bought was some Lizano (Costa Rican Salsa). Our group waited for about 30 minutes in immigration, which was more intimidating then it seemed. Out the doors of the airport there were many weird guys asking even more weird questions…perhaps they were drunk. Once I put my bags on the bus I was excited to find out we were stopping for lunch. Ohh man was the food amazing! Better then the five hour bus trip to Sierpe. It seemed to drag on and was a blur. Every now and then when I was not dozed off, our guide Daniel was discussing interesting Costa Rican history and facts. But, still I was relieved when we finally made it to Sierpe around 6:30 PM (just in time for dinner). The food was authentic as Costa Rica. After dinner I enjoyed a guided walk through Sierpe, which lasted all of about ten minutes. The hotel though was not exactly what I had pictured when the teachers said “hotel”. From the looks and reactions of others, they were thinking the same thing. Long story short, I had a curtain for a bathroom door and I could hear everything outside my window. As if I was listening to the awful soundtrack “The Sounds of Costa Rica,” Clay played the first day of class.
P.S. A marine toad jumped in my lap tonight after identifying it as such. Geez… what else is going to happen on this trip? I surely know this is not the high.
Peace,
