We were picked up 40 minutes late from our hotel and taken to the harbour where we got on a tall ship called Ramarama, which we know means butterfly in Malaysian. We set off for Tivua, a tiny island in the Mamanuca Islands, just off the coast. It took an hour and a half to get there, and on the way we were given snacks and a demonstration of a traditional kava ceremony. Kava is a potent drink served in half a coconut. They clap a bit and then down a cupful. David and I tried it and we thought it tasted like mud - it was horrible! On arrival we took a little boat to the shore and then waded to the beach. It was a typical tropical island surrounded by white sand and blue sea, and covered in palm trees, birds and brightly-coloured flowers. It was tiny, and we could walk around it in 10 minutes. On arrival we pitched our spot and then hired some snorkelling gear. We then waded out to the coral. The tide was pretty low, so when I started swimming I scratched my stomach over some coral, which I couldn't see due to the churned up water. It really hurt and now I have a strange row of scratches across my tummy. The snorkelling was good with lots of colourful fish different to the ones we saw in Asia, and David saw a stingray. Back on land my stomach looked horrific and was swollen due to the salt water. Lunch was a tasty barbecue with fish, sausage and chicken. We had some beer and then went on a glass-bottomed boat which was not as good as we had hoped because the boat's engine scared away all the fish so we only saw coral and starfish. Back on the island there was just time for some photos before we headed back to the Ramarama. On the way back to Nadi we were treated to some songs on the guitar and a demonstration of basket weaving out of a palm leaf. A very large Fijian man broke a coconut in two using his bare hand, karate style. Back in Nadi we went to the Curry House for dinner. We ate curries with a touch of Fijian influence. They were delicious! Mine was very buttery and David's had loads of flavour. It came with roti, dhal, rice, poppadums, spicy potatoes and some sauces. Delicious! We took a taxi back to the hotel and got an early night ready for tomorrow.
