Heading north from the Fox Glacier, our first stop was in Harihari, where David wanted to look at a model of the first biplane to fly from Australia to New Zealand. Next we stopped at Pukekura to try the famous possum pies, but unfortunately they had run out so we had venison pie instead. We passed through Hokitika and Greymouth, which were very functional, and then stopped at the interesting Punakaiki Pancake Rocks. They are basically cliffs and blowholes that look like a giant stack of pancakes. The sea was beating against them and the wind was howling, causing massive amounts of spray. They were pretty impressive and unusual. They are formed by weathering of the rock. As it was getting dark, we stopped for the night in Westport, in a beautiful hostel built in 1863.
