Udaipur is known as the "City Of Lakes", which is a bit strange with us being in the middle of the desert. It's a lot more touristy than other places we've been to so far. There's a lot of posh hotels, including one in the middle of the lake costing 800 quid a night apparently! We spent two nights in "palace" style accomodation which was very nice. Don't want to get used to it though, we're gonna have go back to slumming it in hostels again very soon.
Had v nice dinner on 1st nite in a v upmarker restaurant overlooking the lake. Meat & beer was on the menu too, which is a bonus! Udaipur is a v popular place for holding Royal weddings for the more well off & there was a wedding party taking place that night. They know how to throw a party over here!! Fireworks were deafening as was the music that pumped out until the early hours of the morning!! Earplugs came in v handy that night!! Ha ha!
Sightseeing round the city the next day with Raju our driver. He dropped us off at a puppet museum 1st which was a bit better then it sounds!! The puppets were all handmade & depicting various Indian tribes & national costumes/dances etc. There was also a mask section...check out the photo!!!
Next it was to an art & textiles shop/school, & Kerry being Kerry had to use the opportunity to do some shopping, buying a silk pashmina. It is used as a cover up over here as most of her wardrobe has not been used yet due to local values on dresscode. It is deemed offensive to show shoulders, breasts or too much leg.
Off to the lake next where we hired a pedalo out with the intention of pedalling out to the expensive hotel. Trouble is we only had it for 20 minutes, so we only got half way there! We spent the 1st 5 minutes going round in circles trying to figure out the steering! Should have got some practice in at Sandall Park before we came over!!
Last stop was City Palace which we had high hopes for. Unfortunately it turned out to be just another museum, & we'd definately had our fill of them by that point! Had a look round for 5 minutes, then spent the next half an hour trying to find our way out!
Overall Udaipur was nice to see but we were glad to leave. Can see why people would come on holiday here to relax but it wasn't really up our street.
