Where I stayed
Well here we are in the Big Apple. I don't want to keep going on about this weather but it's unbelievably hot, the high 90's is hot enough but when you add on the humidity it makes it feel in excess of 100, even the locals are complaining! They have even set up cooling centres New Yorkers can go to; yes you guessed it, to cool down! After the last hotel I am please to say this one is wonderfully luxurious and yes its way over budget but we have to have treats occasionally you know! The room is decorated imaginatively; it has a huge bed, fluffy robes and a massive rain shower with L'Occitane toiletries. To top it off it has views over the park and a terrace and plunge on the roof with great views, ah bliss!
Today we walked about 10 miles, we were planning to use the subway (Tube) but we get carried away seeing all attractions and of course looking up at all the sky scrapers, we did have to keep diving into Starbucks to cool off
After lunch we walked the two miles down to Battery Park, last time we were in town the Ferry to the Statue of Liberty was not running, it was shortly after 9/11 and they were not allowing tourists to go near the island. Any way today the Ferry was running, their security checks are very strict. The ferry fare is $12 each. Believe me on a steaming hot day like this the water is the coolest place to be. You have to book in advance to go up the tower, so we made do with circumnavigating the statue and got some great pictures.
The next day we spent the morning walking around Central Park, a beautiful place which is huge, taking up 843 acres of land. The land was set aside in 1856 and considering the high price of land on Manhattan it is amazing it still exists today. There are several ponds, balls parks, rocky hills, a zoo and of course the famous Strawberry fields area which was dedicated to the memory of John Lennon. John lived and was murdered in front of the Dakota Building; best remember that one for the pub quiz!
We enjoyed a nice lunch in Macy's basement restaurant before boarding yet another train. Next stop Boston and New England. I hope you're keeping up now; there will be a test at the end of the trip!
