We've been here almost a week now and hadn't yet really seen Montevideo, only the mediocrecy of the suburban neighbourhood that the school is in. So today was the day when we would make our debut in 'ciudad vieja', the city centre basically.

We got a bus to the main square which was grand, large, and fringed with old ornate buildings (as demonstrated somewhat by our expertly taken photos below). In the centre of this square, or plaza indendiencia to give it its proper name, is the statue and mausoleum of the national hero of these parts. Some guy called Artigas. When Ott posed for a photo on the steps of the statue she was quickly shewed off by the 3 guards - apparently you're not allowed to stand on the steps. Although this was probably technically treason on Ott's part, they let us off.

We spent the rest of the day walking around the old town which, to be honest, isnt amazing - a few nice squares and thats about it really. We did have our dinner in the rather nice, if not touristy, Mercado Del Puerto which is very easy on the eye and, i would imagine, pretty atmospheric when full.
