We took an early morning flight to Koh Samui, the world's most fantastic airport – just think of tropical beach huts with baggage conveyor belts in them and coconut trees surrounding you.  From there, we took a catamaran to Koh Tao.  It turns out that we'd made a booking with the largest dive company on Koh Tao, Ban's Diving Resort.  This resort churns out 4% of the world's annual quota of qualified divers.  On one of the days we were there, they knocked out 125 PADI Open Water certificated divers!
We are staying in a beautifully set out hilltop bungalow with fantastic views.  Andy takes great pleasure sitting out on the balcony with his binoculars spying on all the comings and goings in the waters below us.  Between arriving and departing we've done quite a bit of scuba diving, unfortunately the visibility hasn't been great due to the fact that it is monsoon season here.  However, the winds have died down the past few days and on our last 2 dives we have had the best visibility yet (about 8-10metres).
Andy partook in a spot of night fishing on a 40foot vessel.  Apart from the 6 boathands, he was the only person on the boat.  Sadly he was unsuccessful in bringing anything back for dinner, but he enjoyed his time with the locals who couldn’t speak English until 2am.
We are booked in for 2 more dives tomorrow (12 August 2010).  We are looking forward to it as the weather has been very favourable.  On our last full day on Koh Tao, we did 2 dives in the afternoon.  We went out to a dive site we hadn't been to before, called "Chumphon Pinnacle".  All the resident divemasters had raved about the dive site so we were glad we finally did manage to go.  It was an amazing dive, the deepest we'd done whilst on Koh Tao but the visibility had greatly improved and the fish population was tremendous.  There were large schools of barracuda, a monster grouper chilling out on the sandbed, a few starfish and loads of other little tropical fish.  The visibility was about 30m, a drastic improvement from the 8m visibility we'd become accustomed to whilst on the island!
