Hiya! Fran here.

After an awesome hike in Seorak National Park, which I absolutely loved, it was the 'boys' part of the tour of Korea!

We stayed in Gangneung on Monday night and on Tuesday morning we got another bus to Jeongdongjin to see a North Korean sub which had been captured spying off the South Korean coast in 1996. We got a lift from the owner of the hotel we were staying at as this 'park' was quite a way out of town. It was a very random park with lots of planes on show, including an ex-president's plane, a huge war ship on display and the captured North Korean submarine. Like I said - boys toys!

We had planned to get down to Samcheok after the afternoon in the park but the trains were all booked so we grabbed some local food called 'sundubu' which was a 'jeongol' stew with special local tofu and had an early night (watching The Voice! Hehe!).

On Wednesday it was part two of the boys trip - this time to a penis park. Yes, really. A park full of phallic sculptures!

First up, on the way to Samcheok we caught the 'sea-train'. This train had been remodelled so all the seats faced sidewards to the sea, so tourists can get maximum sea views. It was an awful day's weather but the train ride was a lot of fun thanks to a train full of school children and a very imaginative MC (train conductor!). The conductor played music and showed each of the carriages on the TV screens as he got the children to do singing and dancing competitions! Very amusing!

When we got to Samcheok it wasn't raining so we decided to try and brave the penis park. We jumped in a taxi and then realised two minutes in that the park was almost 30kms away! Not only that but it started raining! We decided that the penis park wasn't meant to be so we got the taxi to turn around and take us back to the bus terminal where we caught the bus to Gyeongju.

So, Wednesday ended up being a day of just journeys but it wasn't all bad and though we missed out on the phallic park to Andy's dismay (haha!) we got to our planned destination, ready for the former capital, Gyeongju, the old Shilla Kingdom. Mahoney will tell you all about it...

Later peeps,
Mrs. M xx
