Hiya, Fran here today!

We got the 10am Greyhound bus to Townsville. This bus wasn't as new as our first one but the driver played some movies on the shared screens so it was actually more fun! Inevitably, I literally laughed out loud at the silly bits so I'm sure I embarrassed Andy a bit but says he doesn't really mind!

When we got to Townsville, we got our free pickup to Civic Guest House. When we checked in we asked if we could stay a few more nights and the guy said yes, but that we'd have to book quickly as they were pretty full. We went upstairs to find no air con, which we thought we had booked so I went down again to enquire. As it turns out there were no other rooms available for the next two nights, so we couldn't upgrade or stay on even if we wanted to. After a frustrating chat with the owner, we decided to go to Magnetic Island instead, which is what we wanted to do anyway, but it just felt like our options were removed from us. This was the second time in two days that we couldn't do something because things were getting booked up so we spent an couple of hours or so on the free Internet, booking all of our buses and accommodation so we weren't disappointed again. It's just so busy here at the moment, and going into school holidays it'll only get worse!

Anyway, we decided to go for a walk. We walked through town, which seemed like a ghost town... All the shops were closed (before 4pm) and no one as around. We then walked to the port and down the beach front, which was lovely. At the end of the beach there's a rock pool where you can swim sting-free. Next to this we were told that you could see turtles. I looked really carefully but couldn't see very well as the water was quite rough. I'm sure I spotted a couple of turtles but Andy said they were just rocks.

Then I spotted one and I shouted and Andy saw it too! Woohoo! It stuck its really long neck out before going under again. I then got the camera out and tried to capture them when they popped up again and after about half an hour of fun I managed to get a couple of sketchy shots. I won't be giving up my (non-existent) day job to be going on shoot with David Attenborough any time soon, that's for sure, but I had SO much fun trying! It felt like the turtle knew I was trying to get him on the camera and he was playing with me, bobbing up and down. I think you can just about make out that the shot of him that I ended up finally getting is where he is looking straight at me! Cheeky beggar! :0)

We were going to try to walk up the massive hill to overlook Townsville and capture the sunset but after my turtle antics we ran out of time.

When we got back to the hostel I tried to cook up a nice prawn arrabiata pasta but it was a scrum... literally. The hostel was lovely and refurbished, but there was one sink, two frying pans and two cookers for a hostel full of people. It was every man for himself and it was a horrible cooking experience so all in all I was relieved that the next day we'll be moving on!

Next stop... Magnetic Island!

See you later!
