We had a bit of a late start to today's long drive and after stopping so much over the past two days we were keen on just getting to Franz Joseph and booking the Glacier Hike.

We enjoyed the drive to Lake Wanaka as this was a new road for us to explore. We stopped off at the i-site to see what walks were available but by the time we had read the info we decided instead to just sit by the lake and have a picnic for a spot of lunch. And to do Andy's fav activity... People watch! Well, actually it was more like dog-watch! Again, the weather was lovely and people were making the most of it, taking their dogs for a walk along (and in!) the lake.

We soon got back on the road and started to wind our way through the Southern Alps before we stopped off at Lake Hawea. I'd heard a lot about Laka Wanaka so we made this our main stop off destination, but we should have waited just a little longer... Lake Hawea was absolutely glorious! The lake was still enough to see a perfect reflection of the surrounding mountains. Andy made full use of the camera and took some of his fav snaps. We're hoping to print some of the photos we've taken on our travels onto canvas when we get home, but it'll be difficult to pick out our favourite ones!

We got back on the winding road through Haast Pass and up the West Coast to Franz Joseph.

I then did the most stupid thing I've ever done. When we got the to holiday park I hopped out of Evelyn to check in and casually went to toss the van door closed, as you do. However, I somehow managed to forget to completely remove my hand and slammed the door onto my middle finger of my right hand.

ARGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Luckily, I had withdrawn my hand enough that I didn't crush any bones or anything. It just caught the tip of my middle finger and a tried to rip it out of the way. Pain hit me and I looked at my hand... 3/4 of my nail had been sliced and blood was streaming down my hand. I cried out in pain, threw a look to Andy (who looked confused as to what I had done), and ran into reception calling out for a bathroom. The bewildered lady pointed out back and I ran through the back room to the sink. I sat on the floor whilst I ran my hand under cold water, trying to keep my hand above my heart and apply pressure to stem the blood flow. Andy came in and incredulously asked me "what have you done?!?". I looked at him like he was crazy for needing to ask. He then followed up with "There's blood splattered all up the van!?!". Oh, thanks Andy, that's just what I needed to hear when it's my own blood! I told him what I'd done and then said that he better clean up the blood as I was feeling lightheaded and couldn't deal with it myself! After a little while, some painkillers and a hot cup of sweet tea I went to lie down on the couch and Andy bandaged me up. Quite an entrance, huh? Andy checked us in properly and then I headed off with my tail between my legs and my hand held higher than my heart. That'll learn me!

Never mind, tomorrow we're off to hike in the Glaciers!

Remember the Lake Wanaka view very well and also the drive to Franz Josef. Sounds as though you've had a great time in the South Island Brilliant views and experiences and meeting all those lovely people. Fran, how many times have I said 'take care'. Sounds as though you were in a bit of shock as well as considerable pain. However you did the right thing to have a rest after that nasty experience. Lots of love and remember 'TAKE CARE'!!
M & D
xx.
