Hi peeps, it's Fran today. We covered a lot of miles on the road trip this week so will make these pin drops short and sweet, on our way to the Franz Joseph Glacier...

After a surprisingly comfortable night in the car park, we treated ourselves to a maccy d's breakfast and then headed back down to Pounawea, in the Catlins.  The weather started out clear but got darker and bleaker on the way so we only made one stop off at Nugget Point.

We weren't disappointed with the costal views...they were very lovely! We also managed to see some fur seals chilling on the rocks below and one playful one was having fun in a rock pool which was sweet. The funny thing was when you looked into the bay on the left of the lighthouse the sea was calm and the sky was relatively clear, but on the right the sea was very rough and sky very dark... This was where the wind was blowing in from. After a few minutes at the lighthouse my gut feel was to make a run for the car so we started to head back. Too late! We got caught in a huge downpour and got absolutely drenched!

When we got back to Pounawea, the weather was too bad for our planned walk around the lake so we had a wonderfully chilled afternoon and snoozed after some food by the gorgeous open fire. Bliss!

To be continued...

Paul on

Just catching up and enjoying more memories. I just checked back as I had a strange deja vu feeling and I've got a photo of my visit to Nugget Point which is of a storm brewing in the distance.

I'm not sure if you'll be back near Dunedin again - as I know nothing about that rugby thing that's going on - but if you find yourself heading up to ChCh from Dunedin call in at the penguin hide at Moeraki. But walk around the back of it for a VERY close look at some rare penguins :-) Oh, and there's some weird boulder things there too.
