Where I stayed
Our first overnight bus! Well what to say it defiantly was an experience. It has beds which is great if you are me, but not so great if you are Andy. They are not such big beds. Not long enough or wide enough for him, so luckily the driver drove like a mad man and we were there within 8hrs. This meant we arrived at 2am, so we managed to get about 4 hours sleep before we had to get up and join into our tour to the Nadaam festival and the grasslands for the night.
All 8 of us piled into the minivan and headed off to the Nadaam festival. I was really excited about this as I had read really some great things and it was meant to give us the task of Mongolia, as we no longer are going to the mainland Mongolia. To say it was a little underwhelming is a bit of an understatement, sadly it is one of those things that has been stripped away and changed for the tourist and all that made it good doesn't exist. We did get to see some traditional Mongolian wrestling though which was good fun. We then drove for another 3 hours to arrive out at the grasslands and at our Ger for the night. It was so nice to be out in the open plans with fresh air and basically no people around. After a bit of chill out time we went off for a horse ride. Andy’s first time on a horse! It was good fun we went for an hours ride around the plans, the horses basically rode themselves, and they clearly do the same trip a few times a day. It was good fun, and Andy will be able to get out and muster when he gets home now! We had dinner in our Ger and then sat around a camp fire until a huge electrical storm opened up. The lightening was amazing as the grasslands are just all this open space so it just looked more spectacular. Then our Ger started leaking as I don’t think it is a regular occurrence so much rain. Anyway we all woke up dry in the morning so no big deal.
That morning we just wonder around the grasslands, had nice traditional breakfast in our Ger and then made our way back to the hostel in Hohhot. We headed out that night in Hohhot, looking for the local hotpot as it was meant to be the local specialty. Andy ordered one (As it is China there definitely was no vegie options), but sadly it did not live up to the expectations for him.
We spent our last day here having a wonder around town, Hohhot the town is not the reason people come to Hohhot, but we found a nice park on our wonders. We then hopped on the night bus again to head back to Beijing for the day.
