Welcome to Day 7 of my Costa Rican tour.

Today we rode the tour bus up north to Los Chiles, a small town north of Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge. This is also border town just 3 km (metric system!!!) south of Nicaraguan border. We were lucky that today is slightly cloudy and NOT RAINING. This wet land is around the Rio Frio where large numbers of wildlife live. Our guide took us down the river in a motor boat while showing us different species of wildlife along the way. We saw several types of birds, monkeys, iguanas and caimans (gators). Our group was facinated at every creature we encountered and we would gather on one side of the boat to shot pictures. The tough part is the wild life were so far away the only way I can take a picture is by zooming, but my out-dated camara couldnīt do the trick. I would consider bringing my Canon SLR on the next trip.
Our guide took us up the river to Nicaragua border for a few minutes so we could stop to take a photo of the border. The only thing separating the two countries is some low barbed wire fance and a "Bienvenidos a Nicaragua" sign. I am surprised there are NO border patrols. Our guide explained to us that the Nicaraguan immigrants are moving into Costa Rica in large numbers to seek job that pays more. However, a large sum of them are coming over illegally, while there sinīt much the Costa Rican government can do about it. The Nicaraguan immigrants worked the manual labor here in Costa Rica on the fields picking fruits while the Costa Rican are doing the high paying supervising and tourism industry, this reminds me of the situation that we have back home in the United States.
We will be spending another night here in La Fortuna before we move onto Monteverde tomorrow.
