We woke up early, piled into a couple vans with pop-up roofs and set off on our first game drive.  The location was Lake Nakuru, known for its huge population of flamingos that apparently reaches several hundred thousand at certain times of the year.  I was more interested in seeing my first lion, leopard and/or rhino because let's be honest... flamingos are kinda lame.

We start out in the forest and within 20 minutes I spot a lion cub laying out on a fallen tree about 50 feet off the road.  It immediately jumps down to the safety of the long grass below and we only catch quick glimpses every now and then over the next 15 minutes or so.  We were about to give up and move on but Brad made us wait another few minutes... good thing as a minute later an adult emerged from the grass and jumped on the same tree to survey the crowd of trucks that had gathered.  We watched her for another 15 minutes or so and also noticed another adult laying in the grass.

Down the road we came across a troop of baboons busying themselves with some rude behaviour.  I won't describe what they were doing except to say that some of their positions were pretty creative.

Next up we were out into the flat open plains area next to the lake where we had good views of the flamingos, zebras, gazelles, and buffalo.  We spot a rare black rhino hanging out with a group of buffalo, forcing them out of his way if they were lying in his path.  A few minutes later we see the bigger and cooler looking white rhino and later in the day find a mother and baby right next to the road.

We took a break at the top of a cliff overlooking the lake and park, then made lunch at a rest stop with the blue balls monkeys.  The afternoon was more of the same... tried unsuccessfully to find a leopard but had to settle for a couple adult lions in a tree which of course was pretty awesome.  I love lions!  All in all I was definitely happy with the first game drive.
