Colorado Springs

Saturday 18th July we arrived in Colorado Springs which is 6,000 ft above sea level (1 mile)we booked into Garden of the Gods camp site for 3 nights. We had our first BBQ and camp fire!!  We went to visit Garden of the Gods state park and had a picnic.  We saw the kissing camels & Siamese twins rock formations.  We also saw the Royal Gorge suspension bridge over the Arkansas River which is the highest suspension bridge in the world (middle of nowhere !!!!!!!).  Monday morning we rode the 9.20am Cog Railway to the top of Peaks Point which is 14,110ft above sea level (Snowden is 3,560 ft.)  You were so high there was a lack of oxygen and breathing at times was difficult. We tried the famous donuts at the top which are made to a special recipe due to the altitude It was 42f at the top and 86f at the bottom.  We were lucky to have a clear day so the views from the top were fantastic!

We also visited The Manitou Cliff Dwellings and at night we saw the coloured light show at The Seven Falls.  We climbed the 224 steps to the top.  Ellen did well as she is afraid of heights.  Tuesday 21st July we left for Aspen.  The drive took us over the Rockies at 12,000 ft through the Eisenhower tunnel at over 2 miles high. The car was OK but still the steep climb made me cringe. It a very famous chic ski resort.  We spent a couple of hours walking browsing around the shops and eating ice-cream!!  We stayed the night in a Holiday Inn Resort at Grand Junction. Ready to move onto The Arches National Park, Utah.

Weather here is lovely with blue skies, 86f and no insects !!!!!!
