We woke up, did the usual quick film watch, Orca the Killer whale in case you're interested (some strange film that Erica watched when she was young), then headed off into the rainy day for an all day Irish Breakfast at the pub. It was huge and thoroughly enjoyable, we pounded our way around the wet streets trying to find the cheapest pair of waterproof walking boots to hire as they are very overpriced to buy here (i.e. more than at home for a pair of Goretex boots). I don’t fancy four days in my rotten and leaking 7 Vietnam specials in the wettest time of year on the Inca trail. We also have done something we hate, we hired those skiing stick type things, we are consistently told trekking at altitude is a different kettle of fish, my marathon knee injury is starting to hurt again and we are both still ill. We are going to look like complete idiots but who cares, they will be handy for waving around to get attention when the emergency helicopter is hovering overhead looking for us.

We paid the remainder of our deposit (god the Inca trail is so expensive, especially when you consider it is just a bloody walk sleeping in a tent). A quick tip for anyone doing it at this time of year, you can just rock up in Cusco and get it for less than half the price we are paying, we also consistently hear the alternative jungle tours are just as good and almost 75% cheaper still ending up at Machu Picchu.  Anyway our small group just got even smaller as the other two UK people in our group are stuck in the snow at a UK airport. That leaves me, the Lady and two 21 year old Aussie girls. That makes for an interesting New Year anyway.  Another early night without drinking, we are starting to like coffee and cappuccino, we will soon be on a par with London Yuppee Fergal, we still start our day up North with half a pint of mild and a black pudding barm lad!
