Well it was finally here, Christmas day. Not a day we have been looking forward to while travelling. A different Christmas for all of us. I suppose first things first, Happy Birthday Dad, hope you liked your e card and sky diving DVD's. We did our skyping in the morning, didn’t get hold of Erica’s mum and dad, but got hold of my mum and dad, Vic, James and Ellie. This took up the first few hours of the morning then we watched a film or two, read a bit then finally headed off to our Christmas Dinner at the English bar the Real McCoy. Oh forgot, we watched the Queen’s speech on You Tube (a tradition Grandma Blacksheep always insisted on), she would turn in her grave if we didn’t watch that beating us with a walking stick (stand up, stand up or I’ll cut your willy off). We sat down at 2pm with homemade Christmas hats held together by staples (you can’t buy them here) and had Pate, French Onion Soup, Turkey, Christmas Pud and Mince Pies (they had been soaking the fruit for over a month – the best mince pie either of us had ever had) all for about 10 a head with a free mulled wine. We also had a few beers then devoured another bottle.

One of the other tables, the place was choca with Gringos celebrating Christmas away from home,  had done a Secret Santa and were handing out presents. Me being me leaned over to the next table and said "you have 20 seconds to get us a present and wrap it, we will do the same", after a little laughter the exchange of paper napkins was made. We gave two paracetamol for tomorrows hangover, we received a sachet of love lube. The hilarity of the situation made me instantly click with the guy who was hating every minute of Christmas till we got chatting. He had a rather funny storey about trying to overcome his Christmas blues by getting off with a French girl he didn’t like last night. He got very drunk and weed in her bed. It’s not quite what we discuss around the Christmas table at home but maybe next year.....

Anyway as they left we noticed a couple on another table, whom we recognised from Chile, Lisa and Steven who were on our flight from New Zealand to Chile and ended up in our hostel. We invited them over to the Irish pub, full of festive cheer and we had a bottle of sparkling wine for about 10, followed by another few rounds of bottles of vin rouge. We then headed over to the Irish Rover Party hostel for.... a Christmas party where we drank yet more.   We ended up back at Steven and Lisa’s hotel drinking more red wine. We are not sure what time we left but one of the things that had stuck in our minds was the fact that all my mum had wanted for Christmas was for me to chop my beard off. And thus as I got undressed on Christmas day night I remembered I had borrowed Stevens beard clippers to give my Mum what she wanted for Crimbo.

It was a different Christmas Day that’s for sure the first in 32 years I wasn’t with my mum and dad, the first in maybe twelve that I hadn’t seen Erica’s mum and dad. It clearly isn’t great, Christmas on your own, then again you make your own fun, speak to who you want to speak to and we had a great time with Steven and Lisa, plus I don’t think I would have got any love lube had I been at home, although perhaps Aunty Anne might be buying me some for next year.  It’s certainly small enough to fit in a Christmas stocking.
