I finished yesterday with the words "If I ever go near another motorbike please shoot me". Maybe its Karma, maybe its chance or maybe things do come in threes.

I woke and the ribs were still not back up to scratch so there is still no surfing. We leave for the Gili Islands tomorrow so we wanted an easy day just chilling. We had both caught a bit too much sun after our 12 hour motorbike ride yesterday so we read, had a Jaffle by the pool, then stupidly decided not to go and give the keys to the bike back a day early but go out and explore the Southern peninsular.

We set off about 11ish and quickly managed to get lost before recovering our tracks and Lady E guided us expertly around the peninsular. (Erica edit: Hmmm it is just the tiny bulbous end of the island). We saw some great surfing spots and as yesterday fabulous monuments in the middle of roundabouts. We were really enjoying the ride for the first maybe one and a half hours then we reached our final stop the surfing spot of Suluban Beach at Uluwatu. It was a great place with nothing but trance, dance and mello tunes, bars, surf shops and surfing. I ended up buying a new t-shirt after a prolonged negotiation due to not having any language in common but via a 5 year old interpreter who managed to convert XL into S still it's better than my translating skills at 32 so I shouldn’t complain. Using a piece of paper and a pen I got a red t-shirt with a monkey firing a gun as it was one of the very few in XL.

We left via the winding road with lots of hairpin bends (do not for one second think I am blaming the Lady as it was all my fault) before I leaned back and turned my head to the side to listen to what Erica was saying to turn back and see me leaving tarmac and dropping about a foot off the tarmac into mud. Erica somehow managed to jump off and although I landed on my feet I hurt my ankle a wee bit. A couple of locals came running over to see if we were ok and they managed to get the bike back on the road for us. The underside of the bike is quite badly scratched and the front wheel a little buckled but there is nothing very badly damaged. I’m not sure if the owner will pick up on it when I hand it back after dark (this is when the days hire ends not 'just’ because I’m trying to avoid repair costs). There is no deposit, and he has not even kept a copy of my passport, never seen a drivers license and probably has no insurance whatsoever. That is why a Quantity Surveyor should never visit places where you do not get a proper hire agreement and insurance docs I’m worried about the consequences!! (Erica edit: Hmmm yes the crash, I came away unscathed luckily, but on the subject of giving the bike back lets just hope he doesn’t asked to see your ‘pre-hire’ report complete with pictures of the bike in it’s current state before he fines us). Andrew Edit – well could imagine with no hire agreement I wasn’t going to have hundreds of photos and a brief report..... Oh well I can always quickly send them to Damien for one of his photoshop alteration sessions.

We went out for a late lunch at about 3 and watched the first United game of the season on ESPN on replay and not knowing the result found it great. I had BBQ ribs for about 1.50 and then we retreated to reflect and write some lines.

It's all gone a bit quiet for a few days. I hope you are somewhere windswept and interesting ie less Aussies and bikes. By the way, my fave photo so far

It is all quiet on the Eastern front ..................... we assume that you are working off the debt to the moped hire Co.

Hope you and the Lady are doing ok and are back to full fitness after your exciting if hair-raising few days.
