Where I stayed
Huangzhou is one of the most prosperous cities in China and is also famous for its beautiful scenic landscape. The West lake is amongst its most celebrated areas, and as luck would have it we were staying there.
The minibus dropped us off on a motorway lay by where the coach was waiting for us (I will never understand how this works - it is bizarre). We travelled for about an hour being forced to endure a ridiculous Chinese comedy on the television. At the rest stop Andrew and I decided to get off and go in search of a few snacks as the shop where the bus had stopped only sold car accessories(?) and we didn't fancy a belly wash of brake fluid
We arrived in Hangzhou at about 2pm and took a taxi to the hostel which was located opposite West Lake. We ordered some lunch and then had a few games of pro evolution soccer on the big screen TV with some of the hostel staff. After mainly receiving a thrashing we all decided to take a walk around the lake and maybe hire some bikes.
The park surrounding the lake was beautiful with statues and ponds and we saw a Kingfisher catching fish in one of them. After seeing people out on the lake in small engine powered boats we tried to hire one but unfortunately they were shutting up for the day. We also decided against the bikes as they were forbidden in the park and next to the lake so you could only cycle on the road outside the park. That was my excuse anyway.
So when all else fails we did the only thing we could do and found a sports bar that was showing both the Grand Prix and the Manchester Utd and Chelsea games. As it was still only 5pm and the Grand Prix began at 7pm we had a while to wait so busied ourselves by getting stuck in to the happy hour B.O.G.O.F drinks. By 7.30pm, the end of happy hour, we took drastic measures as the football only started at 11pm so we ordered a keg on the understanding that we could have our free one later.
By the time Chelsea were 4-0 up we threw in the towel. Rorie and Emer had left hours ago when the Sambuka shots had taken their toll on Rorie. Unfortunately the post 12am birthday cake that we had arranged with the bar for Rorie had to be cancelled. We got a taxi home, chatted to a couple of irritating Americans for a while then called it a night.
