Where I stayed
With our old friends at Smyle Inn

Early start as today we were, with a mixture of relief and intrepidation, leaving all the chaos of Amritsar behind and returning to all the chaos of New Delhi, we didnt have a reservation for the night but were just hoping to crash down at the Smyle Inn as it was a 2 minute walk from the train station.  We took an autorickshaw to the train station at 7.15am which was refreshingly uneventful, no crashes, no travelling up the 3 lane carriageway the wrong way, in fact absolutely no carnage at all so that was fine with us.  The train even arrived on time, wow this day was going far too smoothly for India.  We boarded the train and found that our seats were unoccupied, there were no cockroaches to be seen (I had a thorough look around), no potential elderly bag snatchers were sat near us, we had air conditioning that worked, this was shaping up to be an 8 hour hassle free journey.

We stowed our bags away under the beds, drew the curtain seperating us from the walkway and Andrew climbed up to his top bunk to try to while away a few hours asleep.  I read a bit of my latest novel, Pies and Predjudice by Stuart Maconie, a loving exploration of the North of England, and with the train lulling me as I read my own bedtime story I fell asleep.  Andrew woke me up, I dont know how long I had been asleep, informing me that all hell had broken loose whilst I was asleep and I hadnt heard a thing (no surprise to anyone who knows me really).  Firstly a couple of street children had brought armfuls of rubbish onto the train and dumped it right at the side of our seats then had demanded that passengers gave them money to clean it all up, they are very inventive these kids.  They were then chased off  the train by a steward so just kicked all the rubbish under our beds all over our bags, MY NEW RUCKSACK!!!  Goodness knows how I was going to get the dal stains off.

A little later (Andrew had managed to fall asleep again) Andrew woke up to see a man peering in at me asleep through the curtain, despite a quick "Oi what do you think you're doing?' apparently the man was not for moving so Andrew had to resort to cracking him around the head a bit, at which point the man just shrugged and moved on.  Needless to say when I woke up I was horrified and vowed that its the top bunk for me from now on - Andrew can deal with the looney tunes.  For the rest of the journey I stayed awake, eating tomato crisps, cake and drinking chai, which we are both now addicted to.  A man comes up and down the train car with a big metal urn which has a mixture of milk and sugar in it, for 5R he pours it into a small cup with a t bag for you and it is delicious - it gets you through.

We arrived at New Delhi station at about 5pm, not bad only 45 mins late compared to our 4 hours the other day.  Found our way out of the train station and back to the Main Bazaar.  We walked our usual path to the hotel, past the security door (weird I'm not sure why), dodged all the rickshaws and bikes etc, held our breath as we ran past the urinals at the bottom of our warren (eye wateringly bad - no you can not describe the horror of it), and back to the hotel, there was 'room at the Inn'.  We dropped the bags off and went for a wander up the Bazaar in search of beer, considering we had been tee total for a week.  We found a bustling little place called My Bar which was packed with mainly Indian men but the cricket was on which pleased Andrew and Kingfisher was only 70R a bottle so we sat down to a veg thali to share.  After a couple of bottles and a couple of long power cuts (we really should appreciate our electricity consistant supply) we made it back to the hotel where Andrew had talked the man in to going and buying us a bottle of beer and chilling it for our return (the hotel doesnt sell alcohol).  We chilled out in the room and I started to read the Monica Lewinsky story, Andrew passed out.  Then my thoughts began to wander to our proposed Safari with Ramesh tomorrow - I have always wanted to go on safari in a jeep spotting tiger, elephant, crocodile etc, bearing in mind this is the 'bargain basement option' I hope its not on a cycle rickshaw, but if it is I hope he's a fast peddaler!!!!!

To reflect. In english. Berbatov came on. Was a bit of a midfield scramble for a Bit. Then neville was booked for handball and from resulting free kick and horrible deflection zee Germans equalized. Hope that clarifies.
