So we enjoyed our free breakfast this morning which was a bonus as we had dragged ourselves up at 6.30am as we were going to The Great Wall today.  The minibus picked us up and we began our 2 hour journey to Mutianyu.  The driver for some reason insisted upon having the heater on full blast which meant that half of the mini bus were knocked out about 5 minutes after they had got on the coach.  Don't know if this was a sly rouse on his behalf as we were on there with an American, a Kiwi, and 3 Canadians! Ha!

We arrived at the site and immediately got set upon by the tourist hawkers who insisted that we buy hats, t-shirts, etc, but still no bloody birds nest ashtray, i will be the first tourist to approach a hawker to actually ask to buy something im sure.  Anyway the quest for the ashtray continues in earnest.  The bad thing was that when we left the hostel it appeared to be a half decent day,  however when we got there it was snowing and overcast with terrible visibility.  We began our ascent and decided as was the common concensus on the minibus that we would take the cable car (never a good option with Andrew in tow) up to the wall and then attempt to walk the 4km mostly up slippy steps, then toboggen down the whole way.  The chair lift was quite an experience with constantly having to reassure Andrew that we were nearly there as he had his eyes shut the whole way.  Distant memories of Malaysia sprang to mind.  We walked what seemed to be a large section of the wall and tried to take the best pictures that we could considering the weather conditions, but it did nothing to take away the immense feeling of walking one of the wonders of the world.  It was a fanastic experience even if a little cold.

Whilst we were up there we were constantly being approached by Chinese tourists in full suits complete with baseball caps, who wanted to take pictures of us, this is becoming an every day occurence.  (andrew edit - They wanted to take pictures of me, not Lady E, in one I had ten men and myself all a little strange).  He enjoyed it really though!  Having spent a while up there and feeling utterly knackered we decided to make our way to the toboggen ride - however when we got there it was closed because of the snow.  So I had to endure yet another chair lift with the Stevo.  Could this day get any worse I thought he was going to burst into tears at one point!

We went for lunch with the rest of the 'Coach Trip' at the foot of the Wall which was quite a treat, gosh two meals in one day!  We had about eight different dishes to choose from on a huge lazy susan.  It had been a great experience.
