The Red Pyramid of Dashur is the very first flat side pyramid ever built with success. I went inside and made it to the funeral chamber. It was blistering hot inside. And it was stinking so bad I could hardly breath. But the complexity of the chambers lay out made it all worth it. I had to go through three separate chambers, each connected by a very small and low passage so I could get to a stairway that lead to the funeral chambers.

Dashur is also the site of the Bent Pyramid, who was the first attempt at a flat side pyramid and which actually failed. The Egyptians ended up building some of the most impressive structures in the world but they didn't always get it right the first time. There was a little bit of hit and miss. We can only try to imagine the disaster it must have been for them to face a failure after years of work by tens of thousands of subjects of the Pharaoh. Pyramid Engineer must have been a very dangerous trade back then...
