At 7am we boarded a 20 passenger Turboprop with only 12 people on board (including crew). The flight to Taveuni took about 75 min. The view out of the plane was incredible at times with many reefs and water colored in all shades of blue. We were welcomed on the sailing boat by the crew playing guitars and singing some sort of song. After a quick check-in and introduction to the rest of the crew and passengers (3+ other passengers and 18 crew members!!) we biked to the 180 degree meridian (aka the international date line) followed by a short ride to a natural water slide. The water was quite cold and the stream relatively strong. Since Steffi was a chicken I had to try it first and give my report on which she would decide to go or not to. We were only 5 guest on the TuiTai sailing boat which can easily accommodate up to 22 passengers. So basically it was like having our own charter. This meant less waiting and a more relaxed schedule. Back at the boat we did our first dive at Rainbow Reef (Sams Point). The visibility was exceptional with about 30m. Almost as good as in the Grand Cayman which so far still remains undefeated. The coral was quite colorful with yellow, purple, blue, orange soft coral fans. Otherwise, we saw lots of small fish, a big turtle, but no larger pelagics. The currents allowed one to actually drift along the reef for most of the time. For lunch we had a burger and fries. After the dive we "sailed" to a very small Polynesian village on Kioa Island (north west of Taveuni). More like an education thing. we looked at their schools and hand crafted goods (we bought a little basket woven from banana leafs). Then back on the boat and back to Taveuni to drop off one passenger. No other dives for today.
