Day 20 7th September camping Hope Valley. Rhode Island.Early start! Made the exit bang on 11am checkout time and hopped onto west-bound freeway/highway for Newport RI. Short shopping/lunch break; pre-packed scrambled eggs purchased in Quebec were actually edible and a good marketing idea "Egg Beaters".

Then moved on in to millionaire's row to drop in unannounced (the shame of it) on the Vanderbilts. Their old place The Breakers still looks good although thought it was a bit steep of them to ask $40, even if we were uninvited.  Must have been because we were a tad late for the last private party there, the one President Kennedy hosted for one Americas Cup victory or another.

Seriously, what a place!  On a par with any French Chateau even if built a few centuries later and with only 33 servants’ bedrooms. Ornate to the extreme in every style known to renaissance man and beyond; massive chandeliers, indoor fountain, inter-connecting bedrooms and sweeping staircases (great tea tray sliding) all in the true guilded style of a railway magnate. Made us feel quite at home really and in appreciation of our visit Gaby was allotted a park almost in front of the main gates.

This mansion is only one of many that had our heads swiveling as we proceeded down “Ocean Drive”. We were promised a sweep along Americas Cup Avenue, Newport’s water front, but Cowes it wasn’t.

All this is fog and rain and we still came up smiling, a good day.  Arrived after hours at the camp and were shown a spot by the sewage truck – it wasn’t a Hummer, but should have been. The camp enjoyed the name “Whispering Pines”, Camp Creep was Dennis’ name for it – hardly anyone around and very dark under the close packed lofty pines.
