GBR? Like... The Great Barrier reef... Please try to follow. Yup , I'm here in Cairns and what better to do here than scuba dive? I figure as long as I'm in the largest coral reef in the world (Approx. 2000 Km long , twice as big as Israel) I might as well explore a small part of it up close. The day I got here I booked a three day scuba diving trip which includes 11 dives ( 2 of which are night dives ) , all meals included.
We left for the reef two days later. The boat was great and spacious and I even got my own private room on board which was great for changing after every dive. The truth is that it was pretty crazy. The order of the day was - wake up at 6:30 and dive , have breakfast , dive , have lunch , dive , have cake , dive , have dinner , dive , sleep. Life was reduced to that of a sea turtle , just swimmin' and eatin' which was exactly what I was after. I believe now that sea sickness pills are more important than birth control pills in the great scheme of things. People have been having babies since the start of humanity but only recently have people been spending time on a floating , motor driven machine in the great oceans of the world. In other words , thank GOD I bought those pills because the sea was rough and they were my only survival gear.
The dives were great and the things I saw were pretty spectacular. I saw everything from sea turtles to sharks (Yes , Sharks! ) and heaps of pretty coral and cute fish just swimming around in their schools and coral. Since the famous movie 'Finding Nemo' the fish in the reef have adopted new names. When you return from a dive you saw Nemo as opposed to a Clownfish for example. Being underwater though is amazing , it's a whole other world down there and being weightless is a great feeling. Now I can safely say that I feel confident under the water , equalizing my ears is a snap so I think that I am ready to continue diving in other places in the world.
The crew was really fun and entertaining as well. We had briefings before each dive and afterwards we all filled in our log books with the details of the dives in detail. Also , the food was the best I've eaten so far on this whole trip. I'm talking salads with sun dried tomatoes and Mexican food , and good bread and fruit and everything. definitely worth the money , that's for sure.
All and all , I think that if you don't go diving when you get to Cairns it's like going to Paris and not seeing the Eifel Tower or going to China and not seeing the wall or going to Canada and seeing the... Oh well , bad example. Ha ha , Just kidding :) It's a must in other words. Besides that Cairns is tourists central and not much to do but sit at the lagoon and buy necklaces and digeridoo's.
