No matter how many books or movies I had read or seen about the horrors of the holocaust, nothing could had prepared me for a visit to a former concentration camp. Now a memorial site, Mauthausen stands on top of a hill in solitude and silence.
I will not write much about it, since all there is to know has been written and documented.
To reach the camp is a bit confusing, since there is very little information, or advertisement about it. Trying to find a tour from Vienna to the site was nearly impossible, I finally found one but was more than 200 Euros per person. So I decided to go by train which cost me about 60 Euros round trip; add to this the taxi ride (about 20 Euros round trip) to the camp.
Here is the route:
Take a train from Vienna or Salzburg (where ever you may be) to St. Valentin. Once you arrive in St. Valentin, take another train to Mauthausen. When you arrive in Mauthausen take a taxi to the site. There are no taxis outside of the train station, you will have to ask any of the workers at the train station to call a taxi for you. Distance from the Mauthausen train station to the camp is 5 kilometers ( miles). Don't get discouraged with the transportation situation, you won’t regret the visit.
