Today was an early start as the train was at the station by 7am. We got off the train and looked to where we could get a taxi or three. The taxi line was way too long, and wasn't moving very quickly as it was so early, so we got all our suitcases and moved to a main road to see if we could flag some down. When that idea fell flat, we walked a kilometre to a subway and caught a train to a station near our hotel. We had a McDonalds breakfast and then walked a kilometre back to our hotel. Sunshine, the male hotel receptionist at Holiday Inn got our rooms organised so we could have a shower and get ready for the day properly. Once we were all ready,we got some taxis and went to the Summer Palace. The Summer Palace is the palace built by the Emperor's Dowager, Cixi. It is much more beautiful than the Forbidden City as it is filled with beautiful gardens and it has a huge-8square-kilometre man-made lake in the middle. It was very pituresque, and I imagined how it must have been like without the swarms of tourists. I imagine that it must have been a very peaceful existence. We hired little paddle boats and went around the lake. It was me, Lachlan, Liam, Hayley, Dad and Mum against Robynne, Steve, Craig, Ash, Laura and Elyse. Due to my group's lack of manpower and the rustiness of our boat, we unfortunately lost the race...but we were the group that had the chocolate, so who are the real losers? It was a fun way to see the Summer Palace in all its beauty and it was fun being a little competitive with each other on a very low level. It wa sfunny when the other group pulled into the dock singing "We are the Champions" so loudly that we could here 100m away, and doing a victory dance that made the locals giggle. I highly recommend doing that when you go to the Summer Palace. After we had finished looking at the temples and the gardens, we took taxis back to the hotel. As we were all still retty tired, we had a rest before getting ready to go out to dinner.
