Stari Grad
We left Venice early on June 29 and got a bus to Mester, then a train to Trieste where we were to get a bus to Rijeka in Croatia. The drivers door on the first bus broke - it wouldn't shut - so we all had to get off and wait for another one. Luckliy we had time to spare and arrived in Rijeka with a few hours to spare before we had to board the overnight ferry to Stari Grad. We had a drink and an ice cream in a cafe by the port until it was time to board at 6pm. Our cabin was spacious but (cheapest) had no windows and was right next to the toilet which had a very loud flush! We sat on the deck for a bit and watched the night fall over the water then went to our cabin. We had breakfast in the morning on board as the boat came into the port at Stari Grad on the island of Hvar. It was hot here too! We walked along by the sea to get to the town and the bungalow we were staying in. Stari Grad means "old town" and it is - it was originally the ancient Greek town of Pharos, and there is an archeological site with ruins still there. It is a very beautiful place, many windy cobbled streets and the sea is beatuifully clear and clean. We swam in the sea a little in the evening, and had a picnic there in the first rain of our trip (just a little drop). We looked around the museum and a couple of churches with beautiful pictures and statues, and in the evening found out where the crickety noises were coming from - giant scary locust things that jumped out of bushes at us as we walked along in the evening light! On our second day here we visited the main town of Hvar and looked around but it was so hot we didn't do too much.
