If the Lonely Planet says its not the preferred way to travel, you'd think that would be reason enough to not take the "Open Bus" from one end of 'Nam to the other - but it seems us and countless others decided to try it for themselves.
Hanoi to Hoi An. "It will take 16 hours", they said.
It didn't.
An episode of 24 later we arrived, tired and missing the chickens feet already.
After bargining our way to a room (with a fan!) and sinking a few local bia hoi's we slowly began to regain feeling in our rears.
A sleepy fishing village where craftsmen fashion boats out of the palm trees, Hoi An started to divulge some of the real Vietnam.
An attempt to make a little difference, we stopped by the local orphanage for the day. Feeding and playing with them for such a short time was as rewarding as it was tiring leaving us in awe of the staff and the fact they manage on only five pounds a month per child funding from the government.

Hope everythings OK!
Hi,
Have enjoyed seeing photo's and hearing about Thailand. Its amazing you've only been there a few days and you have seen off the government already! best to keep your heads down if things look dicey.
Would appreciate a phone call to confirm everything is Ok, or an e mail on AOL if thats easier.
Went to Carrow Road on saturday and they were b****Y awful. Can only get better, I suppose.
Keep having a great time and keep in touch
Love
