Where I stayed
Ilha do Cardoso
Ilha do Cardoso is just as I remember it from two years ago: A beautiful beach island which is mostly deserted. The Atlantic Ocean on east and a river on the west of the narrow island are separated by about 300m of land and one can swim in the salt water and 5 minutes later take a dip in the fresh water of the river. A large portion of the energy used on the island is solar and the generated are kick started in the evening. The main settlement on the island is a tiny fishing village on the Maruja beach.
I met my friend Kadja from Rio in Cananeia and then we rode a ferry over to the island. We spotted some pink and gray dolphins during the three hour trip. Unfortunately, this happened to be a 3-day weekend so there were more people than normal, but the beach was still pretty much empty. One evening, we walked for about two kilometers with a paulista couple that we befriended and we encountered only two or three other people. On Monday morning, we took a boat back to the mainland and I headed back to Curitiba. But I will be back there someday! Tomorrow I'm heading to Blumenau.
By the way, the two nights at the beach were the first that I did not couch surf after 16 straight nights (not counting the night that I spent on a bus).
Total nights of the trip so far: 19
Total nights couch surfing: 16
Total paid for accommodations so far: R$55 (about $32)
