This is the last of King Eddy's Welsh castles I will describe, as I am running out of castles and you are running out of patience to see them.
I have saved the best for last- Conway castle has the most soaring towers and the best setting of all, between the hills and the river estuary, and looming over the pretty town and waterfront. It’s also pretty intact, compared with many- particularly the outer walls, which contained many passages to explore. If you look carefully in the photos, you can see much of the original castellated walls surrounding the old town, which itself has a lot of character. On the waterfront is what they claim to be Britain’s smallest house- one up and one down- there is a photo of it.
We were lucky enough to be there while they were having a classic boat rally, and as you can see there were some fine old boats which really set the historical scene- the yellow and black hulled boat was particularly fine.
So, is Anglesey a worthwhile holiday destination for you? In our view, undoubtedly.
In ten days we didn’t get to see everything on the island, or to do some of the fine walks, and that’s without taking a day or overnight trip to Dublin, which is also easy to do from here. We did include some other bits of North Wales we particularly wanted to see, and we feel that to cover Anglesey and the north of North Wales properly, you would need at least two weeks. Being out at Bull Bay, half an hour or so from the bridge, was nice and quiet but slowed our touring down a bit, so we would suggest you stay in the pleasant little town of Menai Bridge, which would put you close to the pretty Menai Straight and also within an hour of an amazing amount of things to see and do.
Have a look at http://www.vicmenai.com/ and ask for a room with a water view.
Next edition, it’s our last travel report from North Wales.
