A friend and I took a weekend trip to El Paso, Texas. She needed to cross the border into Mexico to pick up something that you just can't get in America. Michael opted to stay behind in Colorado Springs because he was worried he might not get back into the US.

Everyone in El Paso asked us what we were doing. When we told them, they took on a horrified expression and told us we'd be killed. We had heard about the drug wars going on in the border towns, been warned that elections were going on so it was extra dangerous and already knew that Americans were being killed alongside the locals without discrimination. But we needed to go. So we crossed the border twice in two days...and it was completely uneventful. We didn't even see anyone else get shot. A couple of days later I read in the paper that a bomb was set off on the main street of Juarez, killing a few civilians and police. I guess I'm glad we missed that.

We stopped at Carlsbad Caverns on the way home, and spent the night in Roswell, the creepy Alien capital of the world. The best part of the trip was the Cattleman's steakhouse in El Paso, where I was treated to the best steak I've ever had.
