Where I stayed
May 30th - Canyon de Chelly campground
After Flagstaff, we drove through Petrified Forest, one of the world's largest collections of petrified wood - old trees that turned to stone after millions of years in anaerobic conditions. The collection is shrinking by several tons each year because of rock theft (and yes, thieves that are caught are fined and can be imprisoned).
We went on to Canyon de Chelly, which is a huge valley on the Navajo land that contains several Puebloan ruins built into the cliffs. Th Navajo still live and farm on the valley floor.
We spent a day and a night at Canyon de Chelly then drove across the Navajo lands into New Mexico, passing by Ship Rock.
