Scott had a long weekend for President's Day, so we flew to Catania, Sicily and explored the island for 4 days. It was our first trip to Sicily. After seeing Taormina, I understand why it became such a popular destination for celebrities. This beautiful city was perched on a high coastal hilltop, and its Greek Theatre was interesting to explore. Wow, the Greeks & Romans really knew how to select prime sites for their important civic properties.

The snow-topped Mount Etna was only a few miles away, and at night you could see the red glow of Etna's lava flows from the gardens of our hotel, the luxurious Palazzo San Domenico.

We also drove west to Agrigento and toured the Valley of the Temples, a series of more than 5 well-preserved Greek temples overlooking the Mediterranean. Spectacular!
