The Royal Palace at Caserta was built in the late 1700s, in what was then rural farmland 20 miles outside of downtown Naples. It contains over 1,000 rooms, many of which are furnished with original furniture, over-the-top gilded stucco, intricate marble floors, and ceiling frescoes. Portions of the palace were used in Episodes 1 & 3 of the most recent set of Star Wars films, in particular the entry staircase leading to the first (main) floor level.
Casertavecchia ("old Caserta") is the original, ancient hilltown about 5 miles from the modern day town. It was founded in the middle ages and contains 2 churches, one from the 900s and another from the 1200s AD. Tiny narrow streets give way to a commanding view over the entire valley, and Naples and the Tyrrenian Sea in the distance.
