Naples may not be at the top of every visitor's list of "must see" destinations in Italy, but it has a rich beauty all its own and the people have been truly gracious and welcoming since we arrived in early January. Naples is a large city of about 3.5 million people, and it pulses with a sense of energy and vitality. Naples also has the associated problems that accompany large cities. Influences of many cultures and civilizations are evident in the ruins and architectural styles of the city: Greek, Roman, French (Bourbon), Arab, and Spanish to name a few.

Since the early Greeks, the western suburbs of Pozzuoli and Arco Felice have been used for both strategic military sites and relaxation due to the large number of thermal spas and baths in the area. As I drink my morning coffee each day, I can see the fishermen out on the bay in their small boats, working the mussel beds and catching fresh squid. By noon they arrive back in port with the day's fresh catch, which local restaurants purchase and serve for the evening's dinner special. Sunday morning in Pozzuoli is the best and most lively fish market of all. Every Italian family in town seems to arrive on the docks to inspect the buckets of shellfish, octopus, and live fish, ready to select only the best for their big Sunday dinner.
